The unglamorous local SEO work that helps service businesses compete in the map pack: profile listing, area pages, reviews, citations, and call tracking.

By Priya Raman · SEO Director

Key takeaways

  • A complete, accurate business profile listing with the right primary category is the foundation of local search.
  • Each core service and each major service area deserves its own page with real local detail.
  • A steady flow of reviews from every customer helps more than a one-time burst.
  • Until phone calls are tracked, you cannot tell which local SEO work is paying off.

Local search is where service businesses win or lose most of their inbound calls. When someone types "emergency plumber near me" or "roof repair" plus a city name, search engines show a map with three businesses above everything else. Getting into that map pack is less about tricks and more about doing a long list of unglamorous things correctly.

This is the checklist we run in the first month for every service business we work with. None of it is secret. Most of it gets skipped.

Claim and complete your business profile listing

Your business profile listing is the most important local asset you own. Claim it, verify it, and fill in every field. Half-finished profiles are common, and they give search engines less to work with.

  • Use your real business name, with no extra keywords stuffed in.
  • Set accurate hours, including holidays and after-hours emergency service.
  • Add at least ten real photos: the team, the trucks, finished jobs. Skip the stock images.
  • Write a plain description of what you do and where you do it.

Pick categories with care

The primary category carries more weight than almost any other field. Choose the one that describes your main money-making service, not the broadest label available. Then add secondary categories for the other services you really offer. Three to five is usually plenty. Check the top three map results for your main search term and note which primary category each one uses. If all three share one and yours is different, that is a clue worth acting on.

Build a page for each service and each area

Search engines match a search to a page. If you offer drain cleaning in six suburbs and have one generic services page, you are asking that page to do too much. Build one page per core service and one page per major service area, and make each of them worth reading.

A useful service-area page includes the specific neighborhoods you cover, a job or two you completed there, local details such as common home ages or permit rules, a review from a customer in that area, and a clear phone number. Do not copy one page and swap the city name. Thin, duplicated pages tend to get ignored, and they read badly to the people who do land on them.

Set a review cadence, not a review campaign

A burst of 30 reviews in one week followed by silence looks odd and helps less than a steady flow. Aim for a rhythm you can keep up. For example, a company that completes 60 jobs a month, asks every customer, and hears back from one in five would add about 12 reviews a month.

  1. Ask within 24 hours of finishing the job, while the result is fresh.
  2. Send a direct link by text. Fewer taps means more reviews.
  3. Reply to every review, good or bad, within two business days.
  4. Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for a review. It breaks the rules of most review platforms and can get reviews removed.
Do not filter who you askAsking only happy customers for reviews, sometimes called review gating, is against the terms of most listing platforms. Ask everyone. A few honest four-star reviews with thoughtful replies make the rest of your profile more believable.

Keep citations and structured data consistent

A citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number on another site: directories, trade associations, the chamber of commerce. The details must match your website and your business profile listing exactly. An old phone number on a directory nobody checks can still confuse search engines and send callers to a dead line.

Audit the 20 to 30 directories that matter in your trade, fix the mismatches, and remove duplicates. Then add local business structured data to your site. This is a small block of code that states your name, address, phone, hours, service area, and services in a format machines read easily. It will not move rankings on its own, but it removes ambiguity.

Track calls, or you are guessing

Most local leads arrive by phone, and most analytics setups do not count phone calls. Fix that before judging any of the work above.

  • Use a call tracking number on your website that swaps in for visitors from search, while keeping your real number in the page code and structured data.
  • Add tracking tags to the website link in your business profile listing so that traffic is labeled in your analytics platform.
  • Record call length and outcome. A 15 second call is not a lead.
  • Review search terms and profile insights monthly to see which services bring calls.

What to do this week

You do not need to finish the whole list in a week. Start with the items that take the least time and affect the most.

  1. Log in to your business profile listing and fill every empty field.
  2. Search your business name and phone number, and note every listing with wrong details.
  3. Text a review link to the last ten customers you served.
  4. Confirm that phone calls from your website are being counted somewhere.

Local SEO rewards consistency more than cleverness. No checklist can promise a position in the map pack, but this one makes sure nothing on your side is holding you back.
